To provide the students with anunderstanding of the role of the Air Forcein support of the national interest ofthe U. S.5. To develop in the student his or herpotential as a leader and manager.6. To commission Second Lieutenantsdedicated to their tasks who will accepttheir responsibilities eagerly, thinkcreatively, and speak and write Englishfluently.There are two types of Air Force ROTCPrograms offered at the Mayagüez Campus: thefour-year program and the two-year program.These programs are available to male and femalestudents. The four-year program consists of theBasic Course (General Military Course: GMC)and the Advanced Course (Professional OfficerCourse: POC). Each of these courses lasts twoyears. The Basic Course includes AerospaceStudies 3001-3002 and Aerospace Studies 3011-3012. These courses provide two credit hoursper semester and count towards the generalgraduation academic index. Students enrolled inthe Basic Course participate weekly in two hoursof Leadership Laboratory (Corps Training) inaddition to the one hour of classroom work.After completing the Basic Course, students mayrequest admission into the Air Force ROTCAdvanced Course, which prepares them to beofficers in the U. S. Air Force. The AdvancedCourse consists of Aerospace Studies 4001-4002and Aerospace Studies 4011-4012, whichprovide the equivalent of four credit hours persemester. The students of the Advanced Course(POC) attend three hours of class and two hoursof Leadership Laboratory (Supervision of CorpsTraining) weekly. The College Deans mayconsider these courses as general electives foracademic credit to a maximum of 12 credithours. Students enrolled in the Air Force ROTCProgram receive all the required textbooks,uniforms, and equipment. Those studentsenrolled in the POC receive a monthly allowanceof $200. The two-year program consists of thePOC only, and it is designed for those studentswho did not have the opportunity to participatein the Basic Course (GMC). The curriculum ofthe two-year program is the same as that of thefour-year POC program. We have a 1-5 yearprogram.FIELD TRAININGStudents in the four-year program who apply forthe Advanced Course (POC) attend a four-weekField training Program at an Air Force base inthe U. S. during the summer between theirsecond and third academic years or before theyenter the POC. The students in the two-yearprogram have to attend a similar field trainingfor five weeks as a prerequisite for entering theAdvanced Course. The major areas of study inthe Field Training Program include junior officertraining, aircraft and aircrew orientation, careerorientation, survival training, base functions andAir Force environment, and physical training.The major areas of study included in the fiveweekField Training Program are essentially thesame as those in the four-week Field Trainingand in the General Military Course includingCorps Training. While in field training, thecadets receive approximately $450 for the fourweekprogram and $670 for the five-weekprogram and are provided with transportation,lodging, meals, medical services, uniforms andequipment.ORGANIZATIONSArnold Air Society: This student organizationof outstanding cadets has as its main goalsmaintaining Air Force traditions and ideals andserving the cause of aerospace age citizenship.The Society participates in many Air Forcepromotional activities, service projects, andsocial gatherings. Membership in thisorganization is voluntary.Silver Wings: This is the auxiliary unit of theArnold Air Society, it is composed of dedicatedcivilian or cadet students who are interested inpromoting the Air Force and the ROTC Programon campus and in the community. Theseindividuals have a distinct uniform and take partin many interesting activities and events,including parades, where they are the pride of theCadet Corps, banquets, dining-outs, and actingas official hosts for the Cadet Corps socialactivities.SCHOLARSHIPSThe Air Force offers scholarships inBachelor/Master degree to outstanding studentsselected for admission to the four-year programand the two-year program.
