GENERAL SOILS. Three credithours. Two hours of lecture and one three-hourlaboratory per week. Prerequisite: CHEM 3002.A general course dealing with the origin,classification, and the physical, chemical andbiological properties of mineral and organicsoils; the soils as a medium for plant growth.Special emphasis will be given to the principalsoil management problems in the tropics.AGRO 4005. SOIL CONSERVATION. Threecredit hours. Two hours of lecture and onethree-hour field or laboratory period per week.Prerequisite: AGRO 3005.The use of vegetation, plant barriers, terraces,mechanical structures, crop rotations, and otherpractices for soil and water conservation; forestand wildlife conservation; conservationproblems, adjustments, and programs in PuertoRico. MANAGEMENT OF TROPICALSOILS. Three credit hours. Three hours oflecture per week. Prerequisite: AGRO 3005.Application of the principles of soil science andcrop science, in the evaluation of managementpractices in tropical soils.AGRO 4037. SOIL FERTILITY ANDFERTILIZERS. Three credit hours. Threehours of lecture per week. Prerequisites: PLSC3005 and AGRO 3005.Fundamental principles underlying themaintenance of soil productivity; sources,manufacture, and utilization of fertilizermaterials and mixed fertilizers, and their effecton the plant and on the soil.AGRO 4038. SUMMER PRACTICUM. Threecredit hours. Six weeks duration. Prerequisite:Consent of the Director of the Department.Practical field experience and scientific work insoils, crops, and farm practice, covering a periodof six or more weeks during the Summer, at theend of the student's Junior year. The work willbe carried out under the supervision of variousagricultural agencies, such as experimentstations, extension farms, Soil ConservationService, sugar cane mills, and others. Requiredfor students majoring in Plant Science.AGRO 4045. MINERAL NUTRITION INPLANTS. Three credit hours. Two hours oflecture and one three-hour laboratory per week.Prerequisites: AGRO 3005 and PLSC 4005.The basic processes and principles of mineralnutrition of higher plants will be covered.Special emphasis will be given to the factors thataffect absorption and translocation as well as thefunction of essential elements in higher plants.AGRO 4046. AGROSTOLOGY ANDFORAGE AND PASTURE MANAGEMENT.Three credit hours. Two hours of lecture andone three-hour laboratory per week.Prerequisites: PLSC 3005 and AGRO 3005.A fundamental study of grasses, especially thoseof economic importance in the Caribbean area:the main characteristic of various genera andspecies of grasses, their identification,distribution, propagation, and economic uses.Will also include knowledge on the adaptation,management, and nutritive value of cultivatedand native pasture plants, with special emphasison the establishment, management, andimprovement of temporary and permanentpastures. Required field trips.AGRO 4995. SUPERVISED PROFESSIONALOCCUPATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR COOPSTUDENTS. Three to six credit hours. Aminimum of two practice periods is required, oneof them in a semester. Prerequisite: Consent ofthe Director of the Department and to be a Coopprogram student.Practical experience in agronomy or soil sciencesin cooperation with the private sector orgovernment. To be jointly supervised by theacademic department, the Coop programcoordinator, and an official from the cooperatingentity. Written reports will be required uponcompletion of each work period.ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATEAND GRADUATE COURSESAGRO 5005. AGRICULTURALBIOMETRICS. Three credit hours.
