COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Undergraduate Bulletin of Information 2001-2002DEPARTMENT OFPHYSICSThis Department offers the Bachelor of Sciencedegree programs in Physics and PhysicalSciences, and the Master of Science program inPhysics. The curricula for the undergraduatedegrees are set out in the tables that follow.Students looking for information concerning thegraduate program should consult the GraduateBulletin of Information.The Bachelor of Science program in Physics isthe traditional program designed for studentswho wish to obtain a solid background in thefield. It will prepare students to work ingovernment and private laboratories, to pursuegraduate work in physics or to teach physics athigh school if additional courses in education aretaken to obtain the teacher's license required bythe Department of Education. This program isrecommended to students who want to makePhysics their career.The Bachelor of Science Program in the PhysicalSciences is geared specifically to the preparationof secondary school teachers in the physicalsciences. The program includes most of thecourses in education required for the certificationof teachers of the Department of Education.However, it can also be used for other purposes.This program is recommended to any studentwho does not want to commit himself or herselfto any of the traditional fields of study in thephysical sciences and instead requires a broaderpreparation in general science.A wide variety of subjects can be elected by thestudents to fulfill the requirements of freeelectives. These include traditional choices frommathematics, chemistry, geology, computersciences, arts and humanities and nontraditionalselections of business, biology, education andengineering. Students contemplating takingcourses outside the Faculty of Arts and Sciencesshould seek counsel from the departmentaladvisor regarding the availability of suchcourses. Students are encouraged to makecoherent selections of their free electives.Recommended electives must be taken from thelist of courses corresponding to the program ofstudy that follows. This list is revisedperiodically to incorporate changes in theacademic offerings. Other courses might betaken only with consultation of the departmentaladvisor.Courses with the code ASTR (Astronomy) orMETE (Meteorology) are offered by theDepartment of Physics.
