Undergraduate Bulletin of Information 2001-2002COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCESCOLLEGE OF ARTSAND SCIENCESORGANIZATIONThe School of Science was organized in 1943according to the provisions of the University Actof 1942, and was authorized to grant the degreeof Bachelor of Science in the fields of Biology,Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. TheDivision of General Studies was organized later,independently, with the objective of offering aseries of introductory basic courses to aid theincoming student in acquiring a betterunderstanding of the physical, intellectual, andsocial world. The School of Science and theDivision of General Studies were united to formthe College of Arts and Sciences on theMayagüez Campus in 1959.In addition to offering its own programs, theCollege of Arts and Sciences serves the otherColleges of the Mayagüez Campus by providinginstruction in those fields of the Arts andSciences which constitute an essential part of theprofessional and liberal arts curricula required bythese Colleges.GOALSThe College of Arts and Sciences aims toaccomplish the professional training of itsstudents and to enrich their lives, intellectuallyand culturally. To achieve these goals theCollege pursues the following objectives:• To provide the best possible programs ofinstruction in the Arts and the Sciences.• To develop in students the skills and habits ofreasoning that are indispensable tointellectual achievements, as well as topromote their capacity to think logically andcritically.• To improve the ability of the students tocommunicate effectively both orally and inwriting.• To help students develop a bettercomprehension of human nature,achievements and thought.• To motivate students to become life-longlearners.DEGREES OFFEREDThe Bachelor of Science degree is offered in theareas of Biology, Industrial Microbiology,Industrial Biotechnology, Chemistry, Geology,Pure Mathematics, Nursing, Physical Sciences,Pre-Medical Sciences, Theoretical Physics,Computer Science, and Mathematics Education.The College of Arts and Sciences providesstudents in these programs the opportunity toacquire one or more of the following:1. Specialized training for practical work inscience.2. Preparation for research in pure or appliedscience.3. Preparation for the teaching of science.4. Training in a branch of science preparatoryfor graduate work.5. Preparation for admission to a professionalschool.6. Preparation for the first professional degree inNursing.The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered inEnglish, Hispanic Studies, French, Philosophy,Comparative Literature, Plastic Arts, Theory ofArt, History, General Social Sciences,Sociology, Political Science, Psychology,Economics, and Physical Education. A studentenrolled in one of these programs has, amongothers, the following opportunities:• Preparation for teaching liberal arts subjectsat the elementary or secondary school level.• Acquisition of the necessary background forcontinuing graduate studies or seekingadmission to professional schools.• Preparation which will enable the student towork for agencies concerned with the publicwelfare or in government service.• Development of a broad perspective andperceptive insight in matters pertaining tohuman nature, achievement, and culture.• Preparation for technical practice inNursing.The College of Arts and Sciences also offersgraduate instruction leading to the degree ofMaster of Science in Biology, Chemistry,Geology, Marine Sciences, Mathematics, andPhysics, as well as the Master of Arts inHispanic Studies and English Education.
