3. HEALTH WORKERS SITUATION3.1 Health workers stock and trendsJordan has around 16 health workers per thousand population in 2008.The total numberof health workers was 91756 (12% of the total employees in the public and privatesectors). 18 The country has 2.5 physicians (generalists and specialists), 3.8 nurses (allcategories), 0.9 dentists, and 1.3 pharmacists per thousand population (Tables 3.1 and3.2 and Figure 3.1).Since Jordan does not maintain national registry for health workerswho are working abroad, the number of health workers who are practicing in the countrymay be less than the figures reported in this table. If we consider, for example,physicians who work outside Jordan and those who are retired (about two thousands),the net ratio of physicians per thousand population could be estimated as 2.2. 19During the last four years the number of most health professions and their percentagesto population has been increasing (Table 3.2). Registered and associate nurses have thehighest increase rate per thousand population (0.3 and 0.5 respectively); while thepopulation ratio of practical nurses has witnessed sharp decline between 2005 and2009(0.9 to 0.6).
