Although there is no significant problems related to physicians’ supply in Jordan, there isa shortage of female physicians at primary health care centers and in reproductive healthprograms. This posed a problem since clients prefer female service providers. Studiesshowed that 75% of women seeking IUD insertion prefer a female health care provider.The MOH has shortage of female providers to meet the family planning (FP) needs ofwomen who do not prefer male physicians. As a result, women who can’t afford payingthe fees for private female physicians are more likely to have missed opportunities for FPservices. Thus; policy makers should find innovative ways to solve the genderimbalances among physicians at primary health level and some remote areas to promotereproductive health services and decrease the unmet needs for family planning. 213.2.2 Age distribution by health occupation/cadreTable 3.5 shows that most of the health cadres in Jordan (85%) are below 50 years ofage. This is expected since Jordan population is very young and the percentage ofpopulation below age 50 constituted about 90% of total population. 26Young health workers(less or equal 30 years of age) constitute about 40% of the totalhealth work force in Jordan. This is mainly due to opening of new faculties and teachingprograms in nursing, medicine and allied health sciences and the growing demand onhealth manpower from Jordan and neighbouring health markets.40% or more of Nurses, laboratory workers, other technicians, support staff andpharmacists are less or equal 30 years of age (Table 3.6).The percentage of youngspecialist and generalist physicians within the age group of ≤30 years was the lowest(3% and 25% respectively); while they have the highest percentage (36% and 30%respectively) of old cadres within the age group of ≥51 years. This is because: medicineis the oldest health profession; studying medicine requires at least 2-3 years more thanany other health profession; and most of the university education programs for otherhealth professions have been recently established in Jordan during the last ten to fifteenyears.Jordan HRH Profile,Musa Ajlouni (Jan 2010) 30
