In this case, however, unit plans, which, as in the<br />

Cloverdale duplexes, separate the household into sleeping<br />

(i.e. bedrooms) on the second floor and “living” below, are<br />

dominated by amenities, including optional sundecks or<br />

sunrooms, and the ubiquitous three-car garage. Kitchens<br />

are in the center, as part of an exploded or dispersed core<br />

that typically includes pantry, powder room, and laundry,<br />

bisected by a passageway and adjoining stair. Houses are<br />

sited on a minimum of about one-third of an acre, and the<br />

entire development of 52 houses is surrounded by a wooded<br />

“conservation area.”<br />

Compare these formulas, again, to the more<br />

modest Pinhook Flats at Aksarben Village, in Omaha, Nebraska,<br />

“Where life comes in first.” 36 Built on the grounds<br />

of a former harness racing track, Pinhook Flats featured,<br />

as of December 2012, studio, one, and two bedroom rental<br />

units from ranging from 481 to 1,081 square feet. A major<br />

developer of the mixed-use but predominantly residential<br />

complex made up mainly of four-story apartment buildings<br />

is the aptly named Alchemy Development. In March<br />

2015, Alchemy announced the most recent planned addition<br />

to Aksarben Village, a 53-unit apartment building<br />

named Cue. Also in Aksarben Village, though developed<br />

separately, is The Broadmoor, where “style and architecture<br />

are a priority. Kitchens are designed for entertaining<br />

with granite islands and open floor plans. Need room for<br />

that ‘small’ shoe collection? Walk-in closets are standard<br />

in all bedrooms. Nine-foot ceilings and large decks add<br />

to the feeling of spaciousness. And when you need a little<br />

sanctuary, retreat to your own oval soaking tubs. No<br />

detail for stylish living has gone overlooked.” 37 Unit plans<br />

are compact, with balconies, open kitchens, and windows<br />

along one wall. Like New York by Gehry, Cloverdale 749,<br />

and the houses at Eden Prairie Woods, housing here is<br />

named—distinctively.<br />
