A fresco <strong>for</strong> tolerance<br />

Focus: The activities proposed are a collaborative undertaking involving a holistic approach, aimed at developing<br />

young people’s competences in terms of dialogue, conflict resolution, self-control and the practice of<br />

tolerance. They encourage them to listen in a friendly manner to the other party in a conflict, through dynamic<br />

and creative strategies which get the young people to think together about the consequences of conflicts.<br />

Type of activity: Core/main activity; evaluation<br />

PROCEDURE<br />

Introduction (15 minutes)<br />

Briefly present the session using the in<strong>for</strong>mation in this document. Optional: take up the questions in line with<br />

the preparatory reading provided here.<br />

Step 1 (Situating the conflict – groups of three – 10 minutes)<br />

1. Each group will have to take on an opposing group with which it recreates a conflict situation.<br />

Examples:<br />

two groups comprising participants with two different religions and who have a negative image of<br />

the other group’s religion;<br />

two groups, each composed of participants who either belong to opposing political parties or are<br />

merely supporters (not party members) but sympathise with the conflicting political ideologies;<br />

two other groups, one representing <strong>for</strong>eign workers experiencing insecure social and economic<br />

conditions and the other representing the host country’s population;<br />

etc.<br />

2. Instruct the participants (referring to the preparatory reading text, Task sheet 1), addressing the opposing<br />

groups alternately, in the following manner:<br />

you will advocate the ‘culture of death and individual and collective suicide’.”<br />
