I think you like jazz<br />

DESCRIPTION<br />

Focus: this ice-breaker helps participants get to know each other and build a group, and raises awareness of<br />

stereotypes.<br />

Target group: pre-/in-service teachers of age groups 6-10/10-14/14-18/adult learners<br />

Expected learning outcomes:<br />

S_DIV_2 Ability to discover facts about other people’s beliefs and practices<br />

K_DIV_2 Understanding of the changing nature of identities and cultures<br />

Type of activity: Ice-breaking<br />

PROCEDURE<br />

Introduction<br />

Tell participants that they have all moved into a new house and they do not know each other yet. They should<br />

try to contact each other so that they get to know their neighbours better.<br />

Step 1 (individual – 5 minutes)<br />

1. Each participant should find a partner whom s/he does not know at all.<br />

2. Each pair looks <strong>for</strong> a quiet place to carry out the activity.<br />

3. Without talking to each other, participants write five sentences about what they think their partner is like.<br />

They should only use appreciative assumptions, <strong>for</strong> example about work (“I think you teach history to<br />

16-year-olds”), about eating habits (“I think that you like pizza”), about hobbies (“I think you like to listen<br />

to jazz”), about their partner’s family (“I think that you have a brother who is younger than you”), etc.<br />

Step 2 (plenary – 10 minutes)<br />

1. Participants <strong>for</strong>m a circle, still sitting next to their partners.<br />

2. They introduce their partner to the whole group by reading out their five sentences.<br />

3. Assumptions are corrected. The participants talk about themselves and say if the assumptions were right<br />

or wrong.<br />

Step 3 (debriefing – 5 minutes)<br />

Engage participants in a discussion on the following questions.<br />

How did it feel to be described by your partner? What have you learned?<br />

How did you feel during the process of writing your comments? Did you rely on stereotypes? Were<br />

you right in your guesses?<br />

What can students learn through this exercise?<br />

How useful would this activity be in your classroom?<br />
