Overall Recommendations Enhance – Distinguish - Sustain Chapter 3: Recommendations 12 After working through the finalized ‘top 5’ list of preferred new additions to the downtown core area, share this list with Kari and other members of the OEDIT, and ask them if they have any leads regarding potential ‘good fits’ for new Milliken businesses. In order to stay on-top of emerging economic development opportunities, sign up for the email list of upcoming events and opportunities through the OEDIT (http://www.advancecolorado.com/newsevents/email-sign). Overall Recommendations Enhance – Distinguish - Sustain Goal 3: Sustain There are many factors that contribute to the success of a planning effort, but one of the most critical is the ability to have the ideas and goals established during the process be sustained through both short-term and long-term implementation timeframes. Key to the sustainability of these Design Guidelines will be their stewardship and advocacy by the Milliken community, Staff and stakeholders, who will each serve as champions and guardians of the community vision put forward in the document. Action 1: Leverage Partnerships - Increase Support for the Design Guidelines by Reaching Out to Partners, Advocates and Potential Supporters Implementing the Design Guidelines requires both short-term and long-term commitments, and leveraging the support of existing and potential partners will help ‘lighten the load’ of gathering needed resources and funds. Partnerships also increase awareness of the Design Guideline goals, and often partners can be both advocates and sources of grants, dollar-matches and cost-effective implementation programs. In order to take advantage of the rich resources offered through potential partnerships, and outreach program should be at the heart of the Design Guidelines implementation plan. Step 1.1 Reach out to groups who participated in the Design Guidelines process, asking them to elect a representative who can be contacted to help with implementation steps, as needed. Create a contact list and email these representatives asking for their support for the yearly Action Plan created by the new Downtown Steering Committee. The following groups participated in the Downtown Design Guidelines: • Milliken Youth • Milliken Business Association • Milliken/Johnstown Chamber of Commerce • Historical Society • Lot Holdings • Thompson River Parks and Recreation District • Milliken Senior Citizens • Milliken Downtown Merchants & Property Owners Responsibility: • Milliken Staff Resources Needed: • Staff Time to Oversee Email List & Group Communications Chapter 3: Recommendations 13
