Chapter 1: Introduction
One-On-One Stakeholder
Interview Results:
Themes and Impressions
There were several strong themes and impressions
that arose from the initial stakeholder interview
process. This preliminary feedback established both
the positive opportunities of potential
improvements, as well as some of the potential
challenges facing the Design Guidelines process.
Opportunity
Challenges
Downtown stakeholders are engaged,
motivated and committed to developing
and championing a shared community
vision for downtown Milliken.
Both merchants and city staff are enthusiastic about the
Town’s future and feel that the timing for this project is
right. Nearly all of the business owners we spoke with
were genuinely excited about the Town’s future and
expressed their willingness to pitch in and help out
where needed.
Small improvements have the
opportunity to make a big impact.
Merchants repeatedly mentioned that their
customers really took note of small improvements (ie.
Heart to Heart’s benches and flowerbeds, the vet
clinic’s façade improvements and lighting). Nearly
everyone we spoke with said that the downtown
holiday lighting made a real impact on the overall look
and feel of Main Street.
Existing annual events are well attended
and regarded positively by the downtown
community.
Business owners and residents reported enjoying and
supporting – through financial donations and/or
volunteer hours – several annually occurring events,
like Beef and Bean Days, Festival of Lights, National
Night Out and the Halloween Party hosted at the
Middle School.
Presence of rich, cultural diversity.
The Town’s population includes a strong
Hispanic/Latino segment, and one of the downtown
merchants with the most longevity is a Mexican
grocery store/carniceria owner that recently
expanded his footprint to include a bar/restaurant
area. Beyond a now defunct Cinco de Mayo
celebration, little seems to have been done to engage
Milliken’s significant minority population.
