Project Area Recommendations Broad Street Improvements Project Area Priority Rankings Must-Do’s – Safety/Regulatory Items • Replace heaving/cracking sidewalk areas • Increase the size of rock mulch tree growing areas to allow for more space for tree roots to grow, and to remove the areas of broken/heaving sidewalks. Use a concrete curb to contain rock mulch within tree growing areas (stage one of tree growing area improvements) Low-Cost, High-Impact Projects • Use volunteer hours to install plant material in existing/new planter pots • Activate vacant lots with food truck stations, gathering places, outdoor yoga/exercise areas, community garden plots, temporary signage/art, putting greens/temporary miniature golf or a ‘Colorado Beach’ with sand, adirondack chairs and a volleyball net • Fill vacant storefronts with “Come ‘Round to <strong>Milliken</strong>” themed displays of community history, culture, home-based retail (QR codes can link to independent websites for home-based <strong>Milliken</strong> industries and businesses) Low-Cost, High-Impact Projects (continued) • Add color and vibrancy to the downtown streetscape by ‘yarn-bombing’ the downtown tree trunks and/or light poles • Coordinate with CDOT to paint colorful additions to the crosswalk striping at intersections (paint can be added to both crosswalk lines and larger ground murals in intersection squares) • Add kinetic, spinning art pieces within the downtown sidewalk areas (smaller art pieces are more affordable than larger sculptures – consider sizing and encourage donations of art pieces that correspond to the round/moving/kinetic aesthetic) • Purchase customizable sandwich boards that can be rented by downtown businesses, and discuss the proper location for the boards with business owners • Continue the façade improvement dollar-match program • Work with CDOT to ensure ‘sharrows’ are painted in auto travel lanes Chapter 3: Recommendations 41
