Project Area Recommendations Town Square Improvements Project Area Priority Rankings Must-Do’s – Safety/Regulatory Items • None Low-Cost, High-Impact Projects • Prior to construction of the Town Square improvements, the existing Town Square parking lots can be programmed for events and celebrations that activate the parking lot space (farmer’s market, concerts, etc) • Install streetscape furnishings (benches, trash, bike racks and planters) in the sidewalk area along the southern edge of the Town Square site • Contract to complete the 100% Construction Drawing set for the Town Square Improvements Medium & Large Projects • Install the large amphitheater structure and platform, including cutting into the blank brick façade of the Town Hall meeting room/cafeteria space and installing three sets of french doors that open up to the space to the outdoor amphitheater • Remove the existing asphalt from the drivethrough space, and install the specialty pavers, new curbs and bollards • Install Town Square project signage along the southern edge of the project area • Complete the bulk of the large-scale design improvements during one large construction project (this will ensure fewer construction disruptions) Estimated Total Project Cost (including 20% contingency): $616,064 Chapter 3: Recommendations 49
Project Area Recommendations Town Square Improvements Chapter 3: Recommendations 50 Town Square Project Area <strong>Design</strong> Description Town Square currently functions as a parking lot that is also used for community events, performances and gatherings. Principally an asphalt lot with few amenities, the new Town Square design re-envisions the space as a softer, greener gathering area shaded by two large trellis structures – a gateway entrance at the southeast corner of the project area, and a larger amphitheater-type structure located adjacent to the northeast corner of Town Hall. In addition to having shaded spaces for events and celebrations, the new Town Square design also retains the existing number of parking spaces, but pushes most of them to the perimeter of the site, allowing the center development to be an open green lawn. Drive-thru access to the Town-owned historic police station and jail is retained, but made to look more plaza-like through the addition of driveable concrete pavers and minimal curbs. The Town Square area is physically and visually connected to the Heritage House landscape. The two areas come together in a round children’s play area.
