PERSONAL - Cont.
• Chose to attend Louisville because of then-head coach Charlie
Strong. After leaving his post at Florida in 2009 as the program’s
defensive coordinator, Strong made it a point to recruit Smith
after accepting the head coaching position at Louisville
• Claims that O-linemen Trent Williams and Jonathan Cooper
have been the best players he has lined up against
• Follows some of the game’s top pass rushers, including Connor
Barwin, Von Miller, Kahlil Mack, DeMarcus Ware, Clay
Matthews, Bruce Irvin, Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril. Grew up
watching the likes of Michael Jordan, Michael Vick and Vince
Young
• As a standout basketball player, was on the same AAU team as
Steelers LB Jarvis Jones. In fact, all five starters on the squad
went on to play football for Divison-I schools
• Played quarterback at Hardaway (GA) High School where he was
selected to the 2009 AAA All-Region second team as a quarterback,
throwing for more than 1,800 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Added 227 yards and four touchdowns on the ground
• Son of Marcus Smith, Sr. and Elba Wilson. Marcus works in the
maintenence department at Kodak and Elba works in customer
service for both Kudzu and The Game. His mother was a student-athlete
at Walter State College, who played point guard for
the school’s basketball team
THE RIGHT SWITCH
Since he was five years old, Marcus Smith played one
position - quarterback. “I was a dual threat growing up,”
said Marcus. “I never played anything else.” Shortly after
going to Louisville, the coaches approached him about
switching over to defense. In just the fourth year of his
life playing defense, Marcus erupted his senior season as
he racked up 14.5 sacks en route to being named the AAC
Defensive Player of the Year. “I’ve always been a team
guy, do whatever the team needs me to do. It was the best
decision I ever made.”
• Has an older sister, Jasmine
• Earned his degree in communications
