Originally selected by the Eagles in the second round
of the 2013 NFL Draft, Zach Ertz signed a five-year
contract extension during the 2016 offseason that will
keep him in Philadelphia through 2021. An athletic
and intelligent target, Ertz developed into a reliable
weapon in the Eagles offense over the first three years
of his career and set career highs in receptions (75)
and receiving yards (853) in 2015, finishing second on
the team in both categories.
BIRDSEED
• He and his fiancée, Julie Johnston, a star defender
on the US Women’s National Soccer team, were
engaged in 2016 at the Stanford baseball stadium,
where they first met
• Played high school basketball with Phillies pitcher
Mark Appel on a team that went 32-4 and lost in
the NorCal finals. Ertz was a center and Appel was
a small forward.
• Began playing football in the 7th grade for the
T-Birds, a Pop Warner team in Danville. He played
left tackle. “I hated it. I actually didn’t play in the 8th
grade. But my mom convinced me to play my freshman
year of high school and the rest is history”
• Became the highest drafted tight end by the Eagles
since Keith Jackson was selected in the first round
(13th overall) in 1988
• Partners annually with Bringing Hope Home’s
Adopt-A-Family program during the holiday season
and does all of a family’s holiday shopping. He also
hosts the family at a home game, where he hands
out presents and gives a tour of the locker room
