Project description<br />
Rue Garibaldi, east of the River Rh<strong>in</strong>e, is<br />
a north to south six-lane carriageway,<br />
constructed <strong>in</strong> the late 1960s. It is fronted<br />
with high storey build<strong>in</strong>gs and features that<br />
were characteristic of an urban motorway.<br />
The environment for pedestrians and<br />
cyclists is hostile.<br />
The configuration and high capacity of the<br />
streetscape exacerbated the effects of<br />
urban heat island. Air (pr<strong>in</strong>cipally NOx and<br />
PM) and water quality was low (pr<strong>in</strong>cipally<br />
hydrocarbons and total suspended solids).<br />
Runoff <strong>in</strong>to the comb<strong>in</strong>ed sewer overflow<br />
was high, particularly dur<strong>in</strong>g heavy or<br />
prolonged peak ra<strong>in</strong>fall, consider<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
sub-catchment area of 65,000m².<br />
These conditions, coupled with a<br />
carriageway reconfiguration proposal,<br />
presented the opportunity to reconsider<br />
hydrological management of the 2.6km<br />
stretch of highway<br />
Objectives<br />
• M<strong>in</strong>imise runoff <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
comb<strong>in</strong>ed sewer overflow by<br />
<strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>SuDS</strong> scheme<br />
• Improve connection between districts<br />
border<strong>in</strong>g Rue Garibaldi by design and<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g consideration, with<strong>in</strong> the<br />
wider green space context of the area<br />
• Reduce ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and utility costs<br />
by <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g a water recycl<strong>in</strong>g system<br />
• Reconfigure carriageway function<br />
by <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g separate carriageways<br />
for public transport, pedestrians,<br />
cyclists and other vehicles<br />
• Improve management of water<br />
quality and mitigate urban heat<br />
island effect by plant<strong>in</strong>g trees<br />
and <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>SuDS</strong> scheme<br />
Actions and results<br />
• Retention bas<strong>in</strong>s were created from<br />
the redesign of an exist<strong>in</strong>g underpass.<br />
An automated pump<strong>in</strong>g system was<br />
<strong>in</strong>stalled to allow water to be recycled<br />
for street clean<strong>in</strong>g vehicles and<br />
irrigation for public realm plant<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
