Heat island<br />
Describes urban built up areas that are<br />
significantly warmer than surround<strong>in</strong>g rural<br />
areas.<br />
Highways Agency<br />
The government agency responsible<br />
for strategic highways <strong>in</strong> England, ie,<br />
motorways and trunk roads. This function<br />
is devolved to Transport Scotland,<br />
Department of Economy and Transport<br />
<strong>in</strong> Wales and the Northern Ireland<br />
Roads Service.<br />
Highways authority<br />
A local authority with responsibility for<br />
the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and dra<strong>in</strong>age of highways<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>able at public expense.<br />
Hydrodynamic vortex<br />
Storm water management device that uses<br />
cyclonic separation to control<br />
water pollution. It uses flow-through<br />
structures with a settl<strong>in</strong>g or separation<br />
unit to remove sediment from surface<br />
water runoff.<br />
Hydrology<br />
The branch of science concerned with<br />
the properties of the earth’s water,<br />
and especially its movement <strong>in</strong> relation<br />
to land.<br />
Impermeable<br />
A material that does not allow liquids or<br />
gases to pass through it.<br />
Impermeable surface<br />
A surface that does not allow water to<br />
pass through it, thus generat<strong>in</strong>g a surface<br />
water runoff after ra<strong>in</strong>fall.<br />
Infiltration (to the ground)<br />
The passage of surface water <strong>in</strong>to<br />
the ground.<br />
Infiltration bas<strong>in</strong><br />
A dry bas<strong>in</strong> designed to promote<br />
<strong>in</strong>filtration of surface water to<br />
the ground.<br />
Inundation<br />
An overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g amount of water<br />
result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a flood.<br />
L<strong>in</strong>ear assets<br />
L<strong>in</strong>ear <strong>in</strong>frastructure such as pipes, roads,<br />
rail, canals, etc.<br />

Media<br />
Natural topsoils, subsoils and<br />
manufactured soils.<br />
Micropool<br />
Pool at the outlet to a pond or wetland<br />
that is permanently wet and improves the<br />
pollutant removal of the system.<br />
