Project description<br />

The garden was previously a carriageway<br />

that had been pedestrianised. The<br />

carriageway still existed, but had been<br />

closed off with bollards.<br />

The project is a Neighbourhood and<br />

Corridor Scheme, developed to <strong>in</strong>corporate<br />

<strong>SuDS</strong>. It is funded through a comb<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of TfL LIP Fund<strong>in</strong>g and Lead Local Flood<br />

Authority Fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Objectives<br />

• Improve an under-used area through<br />

public realm works, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g plant<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

pav<strong>in</strong>g and light<strong>in</strong>g improvements<br />

• Incorporate <strong>SuDS</strong> features<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the design<br />

• Retrofit <strong>SuDS</strong> to the exist<strong>in</strong>g dra<strong>in</strong>age<br />

system of a deep comb<strong>in</strong>ed storm<br />

and foul sewer, fed by gullies that<br />

were formerly <strong>in</strong> the carriageway<br />

Actions and results<br />

• Surface flow is directed towards<br />

ra<strong>in</strong> gardens and trees<br />

• Trees are planted <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ked trenches that<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporate below-ground attenuation<br />

• Water flow is held and slowed with<strong>in</strong><br />

attenuation features before pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through control chambers and <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the exist<strong>in</strong>g dra<strong>in</strong>age system<br />

• Permeable pav<strong>in</strong>g allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>filtration<br />

• Community <strong>in</strong>volvement throughout<br />

the project, with concept designs<br />

sent out for public consultation <strong>in</strong><br />

September 2014, from which a positive<br />

response was received and a preferred<br />

option selected. A dialogue was<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed with College Park Residents<br />

Association (CoPRA) and Kenmont<br />

Primary School throughout the process<br />

• The design restricts runoff to greenfield<br />

rate for events up to the one <strong>in</strong> 10<br />

year average recurrence <strong>in</strong>terval<br />

(ARI) with exceedance routes<br />
