2.2 The Thames<br />

River Bas<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>London</strong> sits <strong>in</strong> the Thames River Bas<strong>in</strong><br />

District catchment which covers an area of<br />

over 16,200km² and where over 15 million<br />

people live. The Thames bas<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

all water sources <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g rivers, lakes,<br />

groundwater and coastal waters.<br />

With<strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong> there are 32 <strong>London</strong><br />

boroughs, plus the City of <strong>London</strong>,<br />

eight areas <strong>in</strong> which catchment-based<br />

partnerships operate and 897 subcatchments.<br />

Reference should be made to the<br />

‘Thames River Bas<strong>in</strong> Management Plan’ to:<br />

• Understand local context<br />

• Target and coord<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong>terventions<br />

• Identify or access fund<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

improvements with<strong>in</strong> the catchment<br />

• Ensure objectives of the Thames<br />

River Bas<strong>in</strong> Management Plan and<br />

local plans are be<strong>in</strong>g achieved.<br />

The Thames River Bas<strong>in</strong> Management Plan<br />

also provides further <strong>in</strong>formation on the<br />

catchment-based approach and <strong>London</strong>’s<br />

local catchment partnerships.<br />
