1.2 Wider benefits<br />
The ambition for <strong>SuDS</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong> is not<br />
based solely on reduc<strong>in</strong>g water runoff<br />
rates; it is also about the multiple benefits<br />
that ensue. <strong>SuDS</strong> can play a significant role<br />
<strong>in</strong> enhanc<strong>in</strong>g health and quality of life via<br />
better air quality, improved surround<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
and other attributes embedded <strong>in</strong> TfL’s<br />
Health Action Plan.<br />
<strong>SuDS</strong> are made up of a sequence of<br />
components that:<br />
• Control surface water flow rates<br />
• Control flow volumes<br />
• Regulate frequency of runoff<br />
• Reduce contam<strong>in</strong>ants to<br />
acceptable levels<br />
CIRIA calls this sequence the <strong>SuDS</strong><br />
management tra<strong>in</strong> and this term<strong>in</strong>ology<br />
is widely used <strong>in</strong> the water<br />
management <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
An important pr<strong>in</strong>ciple which <strong>in</strong>fluences<br />
the plann<strong>in</strong>g and design process is the<br />
preference that <strong>SuDS</strong> components are at<br />
or near the surface. This provides new<br />
opportunities to <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>SuDS</strong> <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
urban realm, which can <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• Creat<strong>in</strong>g and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g a sense of place<br />
• Water management us<strong>in</strong>g the natural<br />
hydrological cycle as a basel<strong>in</strong>e<br />
• Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g catchment permeability<br />
and reduc<strong>in</strong>g surface water runoff<br />
• Improv<strong>in</strong>g resilience to the<br />
effects of climate change<br />
• Adaptability <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>in</strong>fall events<br />
• Improv<strong>in</strong>g air quality<br />
• Mitigat<strong>in</strong>g urban heat island effects<br />
• Long-term and effective upstream<br />
source control measures<br />
These contributions are encompassed<br />
with<strong>in</strong> the four ma<strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, or<br />
‘pillars’ of <strong>SuDS</strong>.<br />
