2.8 Retrofitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Many of the potential <strong>SuDS</strong> opportunities<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong> are retrofits, ie, <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

components <strong>in</strong>to the exist<strong>in</strong>g streetscape<br />

and public realm. Depend<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />

available space and prevail<strong>in</strong>g condition,<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g streetscapes can be adapted or<br />

retrofitted with a variety of <strong>in</strong>terventions,<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g the quality of the public realm<br />

where possible.<br />

When retrofitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>SuDS</strong>, it is important to<br />

consider how the space will be used. If<br />

wheeled goods handl<strong>in</strong>g, for example, is<br />

expected, the design will need to address<br />

this <strong>in</strong> terms of smoothness, access and<br />

potential obstruction.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g may offer opportunities to<br />

retrofit <strong>SuDS</strong>:<br />

• Dur<strong>in</strong>g annual road ma<strong>in</strong>tenance works<br />

• Integrated as part of development,<br />

redevelopment or regeneration<br />

• As part of <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the<br />

public transport network,<br />

such as station forecourts<br />

• Improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>London</strong>’s cycle route<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure, eg, M<strong>in</strong>i-Hollands.<br />

• As community <strong>in</strong>itiatives,<br />

address<strong>in</strong>g private households,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g front gardens<br />

The opportunities – which will be<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed above and below ground<br />

– and constra<strong>in</strong>ts are illustrated <strong>in</strong><br />

Chapter 4. Retrofit <strong>in</strong>itiatives, such as<br />

Twenty 4 Twenty, Greenstreets, <strong>SuDS</strong> for<br />

Schools and Life+ Climate Proof<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

Hous<strong>in</strong>g Landscapes, offer partnership<br />

opportunities to design and deliver <strong>SuDS</strong>.<br />

• Dur<strong>in</strong>g road reconstruction<br />

or resurfac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• As part of road dra<strong>in</strong>age improvements<br />

Road closure, permeable surfac<strong>in</strong>g and tree<br />

plant<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Waltham Forest M<strong>in</strong>i-Holland<br />

• As part of planned road modernisation<br />
