ASON is pursued among other standardization bodies by the ITU-T SG 13 and 15, while MPLambdaS and GMPLS are related to the IETF technical groups like IP over optical (IPO) and common control and measurement plane (CCAMP). One of the basic reasons for using signaling mechanisms is to speed up circuit provisioning, which usually takes time in the case of OChs. However, this is not the case with the network operators that have developed their own management systems, either WDM or IP/MPLS, that allow hundreds of OChs or LSPs to be set up or torn down each day by means of autorouting and network configuration tools. This book’s proposition is based on the latter approach, (i.e., using the management for fast and efficient establishment of MPLS LSP over Optical channels, providing integrated configuration, performance, and fault management functionality, utilizing only the mature features of the control plane as supporting functions).
