13 Future Developments and Challenges for IP over WDM Network Deployment 13.1 Introduction As we have pointed out in previous chapters, the future availability of IP over WDM solutions will be dictated by an evolutionary process that has already started facing the need to couple currently deployed equipment with the emerging technologies and standards. A new management model cooperating with the CP will drive a process where undoubtedly the GMPLS and the optical UNI will play key roles, as described in Chapter 12. On the other hand, in Chapters 6 through 11 we have presented a management solution for IP over WDM that is valid not only for a transitional period but also for the experience that can be gained through its assessment in different scenarios. Then, arriving at the end of the book, we want to consider the next step in this process in order to find answers to questions concerning the immediate challenges and technological developments that can pave the way. The first section of this chapter is entirely devoted to the results of the IST-OPTIMIST initiative. This is because this project aimed at, among other objectives, the collection of technology trends, views, and roadmaps illustrating possible evolutionary scenarios in relevant areas of optical networking and highlighting possible areas for future research. The OPTIMIST perspective is complemented with an analysis of different control/management issues. The general model of IP-over-WDM network architecture that is used as a reference for that purpose is depicted in Figure 13.1 [1]. According to this model, IP routers are connected to an optical transport network so that optical paths provide a connection between two different 243
