190 Deploying and Managing IP over WDM Networks • The network element that detects a defect generates special alarms and sends them to the EMS. Table 10.1 presents a set of alarms that should be implemented. • According to the alarm received, the network element or the EMS invokes protection/restoration algorithms to correct the fault and send the necessary commands backwards to the network elements. In order to test the emission of these alarms, the testbed should have the facilities to both degrade the optical signal on a link in a controllable manner and monitor the optical signal on that link. Also, the testbed should have the facility to interrupt the lightpath in a controllable manner. 10.3 The WINMAN Testbed 10.3.1 The IP Layer An IP testbed fulfilling all the mandatory requirements mentioned here is depicted in Figure 10.2 and consists of three routers, PE-1, PE-2, and P-3, linking three LAN sites. Also represented in the figure is the EMS responsible to manage the routers and the WINMAN platform under test. The routers are CISCO 7200 and are intended to adopt the roles of IP network provider devices. Therefore, the first two are provider edge (PE) routers and the third one is a provider (P) router emulating the core network. Each of the three routers has three fast Ethernet interfaces. Two such interfaces are needed to establish the triangle-shaped network of Figure 10.2. The third Fast Ethernet port is used to connect traffic analyzer equipment with fast Ethernet interfaces to the routers, although is not shown in the picture. The Ethernet ports are dual 10/100 ports, operating either at 100 Mbps (100BaseTX) or at 10 Mbps (10BaseT). Note that the links represented in Figure 10.2 with a dashed line are not physical links. In fact, the PE and the physical routers are connected through the WDM testbed equipment described later in the chapter. 10.3.2 The WDM Layer IP-EMS Figure 10.2 The IP layer testbed. Serial link P-1 DCN WINMAN platform The WDM testbed is depicted in Figure 10.3. It consists of a hub and three remote nodes, connected via a two-fiber counter-rotating ring. On the outer fiber ring, dedicated (fixed) wavelengths (λ 1, λ 2, λ 3) are used for communication between the hub and the remote nodes. On the inner fiber ring, each node is provided with a programmable OADM to set up wavelength paths with the other remote nodes or with the hub. As will be described in Section 10.3.3, every node is equipped with a GbE switch for interconnection between the IP routers and WDM nodes. At the hub, IP traffic can be also be routed to a location outside the testbed (e.g., the Internet). The remote nodes are located at business sites where IP over 10/100 Base-T is the major service.
