About the Editors
Joan Serrat received his B.A. in telecommunication engineering in 1977, and
his Ph.D. in telecommunication engineering in 1983, both from the Universitat
Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). In 1977, he joined the faculty of Telecommunication
Engineering, a center of UPC, where in 1986 he became an associate
professor. Since then, his teaching activity has been related to communication
systems engineering and his research has been in the field of signal and protocol
design for data transmission networks. Since 1984, he has participated in
research and development projects founded by the Spanish Public Administration
(CICYT), and projects founded by Telettra Española, the European Space
Agency, and the European Union. Currently, he is involved in IST FAIN, IST
WINMAN, and IST CONTEXT, three European Union projects dealing with
management of active networks, IP/WDM, and context-aware services, respectively.
Dr. Serrat is a member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers and the contact point for the Telemanagement Forum at UPC.
Alex Galis is a visiting professor in the Telecommunications Systems
Research Group of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering,
University College London, England. He has published or coauthored in excess
of 100 articles and reports on telecommunications subjects, including network
and service management, active and programmable networks and services, intelligent
and mobile agents in networks, broadband networks and global connectivity,
and 3G, and beyond networks. He conducted the collaborative research
and development ACTS MISA and IST FAIN projects focused on network
management and active networks research. He is involved in other European
Union research projects, including IST WINMAN, IST HARP, IST
MANTRIP, and IST CONTEXT, which focused on network, security, and
context management research.
