Starting at the root, the algorithm must analyze all of the branches and discover which combinations of branches can lead to the other end point. • Compute IP paths under constraints UC. This UC is constructed to be called from other UCs (create CS, for example). This UC accepts a list of IP routes and a list of constraints, expressed as boundaries on a set of parameters. By comparing all of the free resources on the IP links used by all the routes with the list of constraints, it discovers which routes can fulfill the constraints. An IP route is composed of IP links. All of the IP links of each route will be analyzed and checked against the relevant set of parameters. The links that cannot fulfill the requirements are marked, and all of the routes that use them are rejected. • Compute list of optical trails UC. This UC is constructed to be called from others UCs (create CS, for example). This UC accepts a list of two end points and calculates all possible optical trails that connect one end point to the other. The process is very similar to the compute list of IP routes UC. The algorithm searches on the WDM network elements database for one of the end points of the trail. That end point will be considered the root. Starting at the root, the algorithm will have to analyze all of the branches and discover which combinations of branches can lead to the other end point. 6.4.2.4 NIM The NIM UCs incorporate all of the functionality necessary for managing the WINMAN inventory that contains the configuration of the network managed by WINMAN. Figure 6.10 depicts the UCs related to NIM.

This UC handles notifications regarding changes in network elements, received from the WINMAN southbound interface (i.e., the EMSs managed by WINMAN). It requires that a communication link towards the EMS is active for the exchange of messages at the WINMAN southbound interface. • Configure network UC. The configure network UC is used when one or more network inventory parameters must be manually changed
