Figure 6.5 depicts the UCs that implement the WINMAN scheduling functionality. 6.4.2.3 NP As far as NP is concerned, we consider three types of operation—automatic, semiautomatic, and manual. In automatic mode, the user (SMS or WINMAN operator) just requests a connection between two or more end points with a set of constraints. The system calculates all paths that connect the end points according to the constraints and selects the best one. In semiautomatic mode, the system works just like in automatic mode, but instead of choosing the best path by itself, it lets the WINMAN operator do it. In the manual mode of operation the WINMAN operator designs the path. WINMAN then validates the path checking if it really connects the end points and whether it can guarantee the bandwidth and QoS-requested parameters. WINMAN Support for Connectivity WINMAN supports two types of connectivity services: 1. IP connectivity relating to the setting up and maintenance of end-to-end IP paths. This type of connectivity service is available in all operational modes as specified earlier and can be managed by both the WINMAN operator and the service management system. Optical connectivity relating to the setting up and maintenance of optical trails by the WINMAN operator in the manual mode only. This feature is valuable in cases where it is desirable to set up manually connections in the WDM layer (e.g., optimizing network capacity/performance or dealing with optical element malfunctions). When a connectivity service of the first category is requested to the WINMAN system, we refer to it as an ICS. On the other hand, when the connectivity request belongs to the second category, we term it simply as a CS. The term CS is also extended to IP connectivity directly requested from the IP layer and not through the integrated management layer. In other words, a CS is a single domain connectivity request, whereas an ICS might involve both the IP and the WDM domains. Integrated Connectivity Service and the Network Resources States Each step performed by the WINMAN system in the provide ICS, delete ICS, and modify ICS UCs brings the ICS and the network resources into another state.
