considered to be the main focus <strong>of</strong> the WINMAN solution <strong>and</strong><br />

includes the set up <strong>of</strong> connections in the WDM layer to accommodate<br />

<strong>over</strong>lying IP connections in a transparent manner.<br />

2. Optical connectivity relating to the setting up <strong>and</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> optical<br />

trails by the WINMAN operator in the manual mode only. This feature<br />

is valuable in cases where it is desirable to set up manually connections<br />

in the WDM layer (e.g., optimizing network capacity/performance<br />

or dealing with optical element malfunctions).<br />

When a connectivity service <strong>of</strong> the first category is requested to the<br />

WINMAN system, we refer to it as an ICS. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, when the connectivity<br />

request belongs to the second category, we term it simply as a CS. The<br />

term CS is also extended to IP connectivity directly requested from the IP layer<br />

<strong>and</strong> not through the integrated management layer. In other words, a CS is a single<br />

domain connectivity request, whereas an ICS might involve both the IP <strong>and</strong><br />

the WDM domains.<br />

Integrated Connectivity Service <strong>and</strong> the Network Resources States<br />

Each step performed by the WINMAN system in the provide ICS, delete ICS,<br />

<strong>and</strong> modify ICS UCs brings the ICS <strong>and</strong> the network resources into another<br />

state. Figure 6.6 provides an <strong>over</strong>view <strong>of</strong> the different states <strong>of</strong> an ICS. The ovals<br />

represent the states <strong>and</strong> the labeled arrows represent the processes to be executed<br />

to get from one state to another.<br />
