On the left-hand-side of the GUI window of Figure 8.10, a tree
gives reference to the various views of the application, in an explorerlike
style. As such, whenever a specific branch of the tree is selected, the
respective network view is depicted on the right panel.
• Establishment and maintenance of end-to-end connectivity services. Using
the WINMAN GUI, the user can create, modify, and remove end-toend
connectivity services. These operations are facilitated by userfriendly
dialogues, in which certain parameters are specified before
sending the request. A sample dialog that requests an ICS is depicted in
Figure 8.11. The operator can either define only the end points of a circuit
(automatic provisioning) or also define its intermediate points
(manual provisioning).
• Display of attributes of a managed resource. By selecting a device, a termination
point, a link, or a whole connection, the WINMAN operator
can ask for the properties that characterize the specific entity, which are
then presented in a tabular form.
The GUI communicates with the rest of the system via the view manager
component. The view manager is the only point of access towards the
