concession, a compromise, <strong>in</strong> either case would<br />

have ru<strong>in</strong>ed all; and Worms, St. Pierre, and<br />

Holyrood would have figured <strong>in</strong> history as the<br />

scenes of irretrievable disaster, over which nations<br />

would have had cause to weep. They are <strong>in</strong>stead<br />

names of glorious victory; Marathon, Morat, and<br />

Bannockburn sh<strong>in</strong>e not with so pure a splendor, nor<br />

will they stir the hearts of men so long. The<br />

triumph of Luther at Worms secured the<br />

commencement of the Reformation, that of Calv<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> St. Pierre its consummation, and that of Knox <strong>in</strong><br />

Holyrood its preservation.<br />
