that you will not suffer yourselves to be abused by<br />

a false notion of honor, but that you will <strong>in</strong> the first<br />

place consider what you owe to Almighty God, and<br />

next to your country, yourselves, and your<br />

posterity." Admiral Herbert addressed a similar<br />

letter, at the same time, to his Majesty's navy,<br />

exhort<strong>in</strong>g them to jo<strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> the common<br />

cause. "For," said he, "should it please God for the<br />

s<strong>in</strong>s of the English nation to suffer your arms to<br />

prevail, to what can your victory serve you, but to<br />

enslave you deeper, and overthrow the true religion<br />

<strong>in</strong> which you have lived and your fathers died?"<br />

These appeals had the best effect upon the soldiers<br />

and sailors; many of whom resolved not to draw a<br />

sword <strong>in</strong> this quarrel till they had secured a free<br />

Parliament, and a guarantee for the laws, the<br />

liberties, and the religion of England.<br />

The storm cont<strong>in</strong>ued for eight days, dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

which the fleet was re-fitted and re-victualled.<br />

When all was ready the w<strong>in</strong>d changed <strong>in</strong>to the east.<br />
