Church, etc. etc. At p. 606 we give an<br />

engrav<strong>in</strong>g of the Martyrs' Monument,<br />

Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh. Upon the slab of the monument are<br />

<strong>in</strong>scribed the follow<strong>in</strong>g earnest verses and the<br />

notes accompany<strong>in</strong>g them:<br />

"Halt, passenger, take heed what you do see.<br />

This tomb doth show for what some men did<br />

die.<br />

"Here lies <strong>in</strong>terr'd the dust of those who stood<br />

'Ga<strong>in</strong>st perjury, resist<strong>in</strong>g unto blood;<br />

Adher<strong>in</strong>g to the Covenants, and laws<br />

Establish<strong>in</strong>g the same; which was the cause<br />

Their lives were sacrific'd unto the lust<br />
