without Popery." There were some who said that<br />

the archbishop was at no great pa<strong>in</strong>s to make any<br />

wide dist<strong>in</strong>ction between the two; and if dist<strong>in</strong>ction<br />

there was, it was so very small that they were<br />

unable to see it at Rome; for, as Laud himself tells<br />

us <strong>in</strong> his Diary, the Pope twice over made him the<br />

offer of a red hat.<br />

that, while the Protestants were severely handled <strong>in</strong><br />

Papists were treated with the utmost tenderness.<br />

favors and caresses were showered on the latter. It<br />

was forbidden to write aga<strong>in</strong>st Popery. The<br />

Protestant press was gagged. Fox's Book of<br />

Martyrs could not appear; the noble defenses of<br />

Jewell and Willet were refused license; Mr.<br />

Gillabrand, professor of mathematics <strong>in</strong> Gresham<br />

College, was prosecuted for <strong>in</strong>sert<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his<br />
