In the City of London the spectacle was<br />

scarcely less impressive, but more novel. On the<br />

25th of September, 1643, the two Houses of<br />

Parliament, with the Assembly of Div<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Scottish Commissioners, now sitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at Westm<strong>in</strong>ster, met <strong>in</strong> St. Margaret's Church,<br />

Westm<strong>in</strong>ster, and after sermon the Solemn League<br />

was read, article by article, the members stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

uncovered, and swear<strong>in</strong>g to it with uplifted hands.<br />

Afterwards, Alexander Henderson, who presided<br />

over the famous assembly at Glasgow, delivered an<br />

address end<strong>in</strong>g with these words -- "Did the Pope<br />

at Rome know what is this day transact<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

England, and were this Covenant written on the<br />

plaster of the wall over aga<strong>in</strong>st him, where he<br />

sitteth, Belshazzar-like, <strong>in</strong> his sacrilegious pomp, it<br />

would make his heart to tremble, his countenance<br />

to change, his head and mitre to shake, his jo<strong>in</strong>ts to<br />

loose, and all his card<strong>in</strong>als and prelates to be<br />

astonished." The Scots followed up their Covenant<br />

by send<strong>in</strong>g an army <strong>in</strong>to England to assist the<br />
