5. The Eikon Basilike (p. 1830) first propagated
the ridiculous calumny that the Scots sold their
king. It has since been abundantly proved that
the 400,000 pounds paid to the Scots were due
to them for service in the campaign. and for
delivery of the fortresses which they held on
the Border, and that this matter was arranged
five months before the question of the disposal
of the king's person was decided, with which
indeed it had no connection.
