first. In his portraits, the face shows a striking contrast
with the background. His watercolours never reveal
pencil sketches as he doesn’t use a pencil at all. He only
uses paints to create sketches that show a high degree
of precision.
“In creating oil paintings of the ‘Lotuses from
the pond at Saimai’ and ‘Goddess Ganga’, Ajarn
Chakrabhand used quite a few paint brushes. He rarely
cleaned his brushes, preferring to use new ones. He
didn’t want to use turpentine to clean paint from his
brushes because the thinner would tamper with his
paintings. But when he had to clean his brush with
turpentine, he would wash the paint off his brush by
painting on another blank canvas and wipe off the oil
with a piece of cloth,” says Vallabhis.
His paintings of Thai motifs, portraits and puppets
reflect his good grounding in drawing and painting as
well as incredible precision.
“As he’s a highly disciplined painter, he always
reflects his loyalty to traditional techniques of his
teachers in his masterpieces. It’s like he incorporates
his own experience into what he’s learned from his
teachers. The result is works of art that are a tribute to
his masters. When he creates a painting, he gives his
all. When he operates a puppet, he’s no longer Ajarn
Chakrabhand, but becomes one with the character,”
Vallabhis says.
Given his artistic prowess and extensive body of
work across different genres, Chakrabhand remains
a highly respected artist who’s gained the admiration
of lots of people. Following the success of his art
exhibition that was staged for the first time in 15
years late last year, the Chakrabhand Posayakrit
Foundation on Sukhumvit Soi 63 is hosting another
exhibition soon. The exhibition will also be staged at
the soon-to-open Chakrabhand Posayakrit Museum
on Sukhaphiban 5 Road. The museum will serve as
an art centre and a repository of art and artifacts of
the kingdom. It also houses Thailand’s first dedicated
puppetry theatre.
