#DIGITAL & VISUAL100Digital& Visual:An Innovativeand CreativeCurriculumDigital and Visual is an innovative and creativecurriculum. The effects of lockdown and theCovid pandemic has not hindered students’ability to design or be creative. The pandemic meantthat the teachers had to adapt the curriculum plan andthey were still able to implement both Digital andVisual learning.The subject teaches students about designing on aDigital and Visual platform using iPads and PCs aswell as traditional drawing techniques to focus theirdesigns in response to an industry standard brief.The students work collaboratively within projectsand develop skills in problem solving and criticalthinking. The curriculum is planned to be skills basedand industry focused to develop our students so thatthey are skilled for careers in the future.2019 was the first year of the Digital and Visualcurriculum and students began building up their skillsfollowing the exciting curriculum plan and then inMarch 2020 lockdown hit. The Digital and Visualstaff were quite responsive to this by creating a bankof online lessons in line with the curriculum plan.Students were given a choice of digital or visualresponses to the brief depending on the resources thatthey had available to them. As a result they were verycreative.We were lucky that the students could continuewith the creative curriculum on their return in thesummer. Teachers had to implement health and safetyprotocols and students were good at following thenew guidelines. The curriculum plan again had tobe amended slightly due to health and safety butremained innovative and interesting for the students.During the second lockdown, lessons were taughtthrough Microsoft Teams using Nearpod. This isan app where presentations that are creative canbe interactive and allow students to participate andcontribute to class discussions. We also made smallcollaborative working groups within Microsoft Teamswhich was monitored through channels. All groupsproduced creative drawings which were submittedthrough assignments in Teams and were givenfeedback.Students worked on Teams remotely to learn about themain genres in films and conventions of film trailers.We watched film trailers for Disney’s’ Mulan and TheLion King and tried to identify the key conventionsin each trailer. The 2nd half of the term we were backin school and students explored conventions of filmposter which culminated in each student working ontheir own theatrical release film poster on the iPads(using Autodesk Sketchbook). For some students thiswas the first time they’d used iPads to create a posterin a digital format and created some really excitingposters using the iPads.Students have learnt a lot about industry and covereda range of different skills in the Digital and Visualcurriculum even through the pandemic. They havelearnt about careers, marketing, branding, creating abrand identity, film production, genres, conventionsof a poster, presentation of ideas, story writing,storyboarding, games design, games mechanics,drawing features of characters, avatar creation,Coding, app design, poster illustration, photography,artist’s analysis, poster analysis, Augmented reality,collaborative working.Students have really enjoyed the creativity andrelevance of the Digital and Visual Curriculum andthe department would like to thank the students fortheir enthusiasm, continued efforts and excellentwork this year!Pam Hunt (Head of Art)
