# MUSICKeep the Beat Music ClubMaking a difference to young people’s lives“The music club is fun andI look forward to it. Insteadof doing silly things orwasting time, I practice inpreparation. It’s a greatway to channel energy thatI would otherwise have usedin a negative way.”Rayan Ali (year 9)“It’s really helped with myconfidence and thank you sirfor believing in me.”Dontae Anyia (year 7)42‘Keep the Beat’ music club was set upas an intervention in June 2021 as aplatform for students’ self-expression through music.The aim was to creatively channel students’ energythrough music therapy and to demonstrate that throughhard work and pushing past our own limitations thatwe are able to feel a sense of accomplishment andconfidence in our abilities.The club ran once a week after school and was verymuch student led. During our first session we spokeabout what our end goal would be and discussed astrategy for ensuring that the end goal was met givingstudents a sense of ownership and responsibility, notonly to the project but to each other. The end goal wasto put on a small performance for a select number ofteachers. The group were fully committed and workeddiligently supporting each other to create their ownsongs as well as working as a group to create a freestyle and student voice.With the periods of remote learning and variouslockdowns due to the pandemic, this academic yearhas been challenging for so many of our young people.Through music, they have been able to connect witheach other and reflect on their own well-being and havehad the opportunity to share their stories, celebratetheir identity and express themselves through music.We were very lucky to have use of the fantasticresources and equipment in the music departmentwhich contributed to the sense of professionalismand really helped with engagement. TheA zoominggood Christmasfor Cranford andBerkeley Staffafternoon of Friday18th December 2021provided a wonderful opportunity forstaff at Cranford Community Collegeand Berkeley Academy to get togethervirtually and wish each other a HappyChristmas. By now we were all expertsin using Zoom for virtual meetings andso like ducks to water we donned ourSanta and elf hats and enjoyed someChristmas songs and an eventful gameof online bingo.#In recognition of all the hard workstaff have been doing and to providesome Christmas cheer, staff weregiven a Christmas grab bag to enjoyover the festive season. This year we sent a virtual messageto them all via a Christmas classic withmany familiar faces rocking along to “SantaClaus is Coming to Town”.
