#DUKE OF EDINBURGHVirtual Duke of Edinburgh 2020-21It’sbeen an odd 18months for Dukeof Edinburgh! Ourpresentation evening in March 2020was possibly one of the last eventswe were able to hold in “normal”conditions – but that doesn’t meanDuke of Edinburgh has stopped!In 2020 we enrolled 65 students into Bronze and Silver awards,and the vast majority of these participants have continued withtheir awards from home. Some activities needed to be changed,and a bit of imagination was needed, but I have been blown awayby the creativity and resilience of our young people.Shenon DiasGoldArushi VarshneyOver the past year, Cranford students have logged 273 hours ofvolunteering work. They have run around 300 miles betweenthem. They have learnt to knit, to cook, and to play chess. Theyhave developed their photography skills. They have tutoredsiblings, neighbours and family friends. They have helped elderlyand vulnerable neighbours. This summer, many of our year 11students will be volunteering in their communities, workingtowards their awards and gaining valuable experience. Ourstudents have embodied everything the Duke ofEdinburgh award was created to foster in youngpeople and I am so proud of each and every oneof them.The ultimate testimony to the impact of the DofEis the number of students who have enrolled forthe prestigious Gold award this year. ThroughHeathrow funding, we were able to secure placesfor seven of our year 11s on the award, whichincludes an extended expedition in wild countryand a residential element. The most challenging ofthe DofE levels, the Gold award, is celebrated witha presentation at St James Palace or BuckinghamPalace Gardens, and attended by a member ofthe Royal Family. We are one of the only schoolsin the borough to offer the Gold award, and forthese students to have enrolled and started workduring a period of such turbulence and uncertaintyjust goes to show that they have what it takes tocomplete the full award. I am particularly keen tocelebrate this group, as they have completed everyaward level through from Bronze and were thefirst cohort I worked with as Duke of Edinburghcoordinator.Plans are underway to get students out onexpeditions again in September, and next year Iam determined that Duke of Edinburgh will beback bigger and better than ever.Marjaan AmanSamuel DicksonShamaila BaigSanjana BholaEvelyn Brooks(Duke of Edinburgh Lead)38
