and tobacco-related diseases have been described as serious health problems<br />

in south-eastern Brazil. Aims. The aim <strong>of</strong> this study was to evaluate<br />

<strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NQO1 C609T and CYP1A1 A4889G polymorphisms<br />

for AML risk and its clinical manifestations in individuals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

south eastern region <strong>of</strong> Brazil. Methods. Genomic DNA from 133 AML<br />

patients and 133 age, gender and race-matched controls were analysed<br />

using <strong>the</strong> polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzymatic digestion. The<br />

differences between <strong>the</strong> groups were calculated by <strong>the</strong> chi-square or Fischer<br />
