uncontrolled massive bleeding affected patients perceived to be close to<br />

death and for whom resuscitation is not appropriate, palliative sedation<br />

was adopted, if consent was obtained. Results. Out <strong>of</strong> 469 patients, 123<br />

(26%) developed 232 major bleeding episodes. Severe thrombocytopenia,<br />

younger age, diagnoses <strong>of</strong> acute leukaemias, active infections and<br />

mucositis, were significantly correlated with <strong>the</strong> occurrence <strong>of</strong> bleeding.<br />

Out <strong>of</strong> 232 major bleedings, 210 (91%) occurred in patients with severe<br />

thrombocytopenia. This finding occurred most frequently in patients<br />

with acute myeloblastyc leukaemia (AML), acute lymphoblastyc<br />

leukaemia (ALL) and blastic crises than in those affected by o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

haemophaties (p
