tention. They must be preserved and adapted to
modern standards – above all, they need to be put
to meaningful use,” summarises Hans-Peter
Weiss, CEO of BIG.
The latest example is the iconic Postsparkasse
building designed by Otto Wagner. Erected between
1904 and 1912 as one of the last buildings on Vienna’s
Ringstrasse boulevard, the structure, featuring the
famous angel sculptures on its roof, is one of the
most significant examples of Viennese Art Nouveau.
Until 2017, it served as the main office for Bawag
P.S.K. Bank, and following extensive renovations by
BIG, the historic building now houses various university
and scientific institutions. “The Postsparkasse
is the focal point of the new Research Mile which
stretches from the locations of the University of Applied
Arts Vienna along the Vienna River to the
Campus Akademie on Bäckerstrasse,” adds Weiss.
The University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Austrian
Academy of Sciences are the largest tenants in
the Postsparkasse building, complemented by other
heavyweight institutions of Austrian research, such
as the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on
the Consequences of War or the Austrian Science
Fund (FWF). “What’s unique about Campus Akademie
is that one of the oldest university sites in the
world has undergone a metamorphosis into a cutting-edge
urban campus, revitalising a once-sleepy
district in Vienna’s city centre.” Hans-Peter Weiss
expresses his delight in the exemplary restoration of
the historical buildings. “The iconic Postsparkasse
building is transforming into a vibrant hub for art,
science and the public!”
In many ways, BIG plays a significant role in
Austria’s art and cultural landscape, ensuring not
only exciting contributions from contemporary art
but also the contemporary use and public access to
the architectural heritage of the Republic.
