Librarians are constantly looking for ways to utilize
their limited collection development funds more
effectively and efficiently. Arkansas State
University’s library makes annual collection
development allocations to academic departments
using a weighted formula based on various factors
including departmental credit hour production, the
number of graduates, graduate programs, and the
average costs of books and journals. We will
describe the factors used, why they were chosen,
and how the formula can be modified for a variety
of libraries. This session will interest those
concerned with the allocation of a library’s
financial resources.
