In the Reception of the 32nd Degree (see below), the following description<br />

of the three Craft Degrees is given:<br />

"The 1st degree shows you man, such as nature has made him, with no other<br />

resources than his physical strength. The 2nd degree teaches the necessity<br />

and holiness of labor, and consequently of knowledge. The 3rd degree<br />

teaches us that our unavoidable destiny is death; but at the same time,<br />

in the ceremony and in the very name of Hiram, it shadows forth the great<br />

doctrine of another life, and the immortality of the soul."<br />
