Framework Programme) in the research area <strong>of</strong> NMP-2008-1.3-<br />

2: Impact <strong>of</strong> engineered nanoparticles on health <strong>and</strong> the<br />

environment.<br />

number <strong>of</strong> beneficial applications, the potential impact on the<br />

environment <strong>and</strong> human health <strong>of</strong> certain “nanomaterials” <strong>and</strong><br />

“nanoproducts” is not yet fully well understood. Not only<br />

should nanotechnologies be safely applied <strong>and</strong> produce results<br />

in the shape <strong>of</strong> useful products <strong>and</strong> services, but there should be<br />

also public consensus on their overall impact. In fact, the risk<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> engineered nanomaterials has become the focus<br />

<strong>of</strong> increasing attention. To date the widely accepted view is that<br />

there are many unanswered questions on the potential<br />

environmental <strong>and</strong> health risks associated with the<br />

manufacture, use, distribution <strong>and</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> nanomaterials.<br />

In 2005, the Commission requested the Scientific Committee on<br />

Emerging <strong>and</strong> Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) for an<br />

Compendium <strong>of</strong> Projects in the European NanoSafety Cluster 217
