Von so unterschiedlichen Einflüssen geprägt wie der Zwölftontechnik Schönbergs und Weberns, der Modalität Messiaens, östlicher Philosophie und Religion, Stockhausens Zeitbegriff und der Anthroposophie Steiners, entwickelte Harvey einen Stil, der unmittelbare Erlebbarkeit und Transzendenz zu verbinden sucht. Wichtigstes Mittel ist ihm das Zusammenspiel von elektronischer, auf Tonband aufgezeichneter mit live auf akustischen Instrumenten gespielter Musik. Rein »klassische« Besetzungen sind in seinem Werk aber ebenso präsent, wie in der Serenade (In Homage to Mozart) für zehnköpfiges Bläserensemble, die durch die Serenaden-Form und durch die Besetzung mit Holzbläsern und zwei Hörnern einen klaren Bezug zur Mozartschen Form- und Klangwelt herstellt. Jonathan Harvey was born in Suton Coldfield, Warwickshire, in 1939. Today he is one of Britain‘s most innovative contemporary composers, reflecting influences as wide-ranging as the serialism of Schönberg and Webern, Messiaen‘s modality, oriental philosophy and religion, Stockhausen‘s concept of time and Rudolph Steiner‘s anthroposophy. From this he has fashioned a style that attempts to unite immediacy of perception and transcendence. His most important device is the interaction of pre-recorded tape and traditional live performance. Yet his œuvre is equally noteworthy for its “classical“ settings, as in the Serenade (In Homage to Mozart)) for ten-piece wind ensemble, where the serenade form and the choice of instruments clearly relate to Mozart’s musical universe. Jonathan Harvey, né en 1939 à Suton Coldfield, Warwickshire, fait partie des compositeurs contemporains les plus novateurs de Grande-Bretagne. Influencé par des techniques aussi différentes que la dodécaphonie de Schönberg et Webern, la modalité de Messiaen, la philosophie et la religion orientales, la notion du temps de Stockhausen et l’anthroposophie de Steiner, Harvey a mis au point un style qui cherche à mettre en relation l’expérience de la vie et la transcendance. Un moyen primordial est pour lui la combinaison de musiques enregistrées sur bande sonore avec de la musique jouée « live ». Mais on trouve dans son œuvre également des distributions purement « classiques », comme dans la Serenade (In Homage to Mozart), pour ensemble de dix instruments à vent, qui établit clairement des liens avec le monde formel et sonore de Mozart, de par la forme de la sérénade et la distribution.

Er studierte Philologie und Komposition und promovierte 1978 über Mahler. 1975 gewann er den Scottish National Orchestra’s Ian White Award; spätestens damit begann die Karriere eines der heute prominentesten britischen Komponisten. Matthews’ nahezu alle Genres umfassendes Werk wurde von zahlreichen namhaften Orchestern und Ensembles aufgeführt und vielfach eingespielt. Das Bläsersextet To Compose… bezeichnet Matthews als »Würfelspiel«, basierend auf Motiven Mozarts. Es entstand in Mozarts 200. Todesjahr und wurde vom London Composers Ensemble uraufgeführt. The composer and CD producer Colin Matthews was born in London in 1945. He studied philology and composition, taking the doctorate in 1978 with a dissertation on Mahler. In 1975 he won the Scottish National Orchestra‘s Ian White Award, thereby launching his career as one of the most prominent composers in Great Britain today. Matthews‘s œuvre covers practically all genres and has been played and frequently recorded by many leading orchestras and instrumental ensembles. The composer refers to his wind sextet To Compose… as a “dice game “ based on motifs from Mozart. It was written in the year of the Mozart bicentennial and was given its première by the London Composers Ensemble. Le compositeur et producteur de CD Colin Matthews est né à Londres en 1945. Il a fait des études de philologie et de composition et à soutenu en 1978 une thèse sur Mahler. En 1975, il a remporté le Scottish National Orchestra’s Ian White Award ; c’est au plus tard à cette date que commença la carrière d’un des plus célèbres compositeurs britanniques. L’œuvre de Matthew touche pratiquement tous les genres et a été interprété et souvent enregistré par pratiquement tous les grands orchestres et ensembles. Matthew qualifie son sextuor pour instruments à vents To Compose… de « Jeu de dés », s’appuyant sur des motifs de Mozart.
