Auf seiner ersten großen Europareise gewann Mozart 1763 in London die Gunst Johann Christian
Bachs, der ihn nachhaltig beeinflussen sollte. Mozart richtete sich sogleich drei Klaviersonaten
Bachs für zwei Violinen und Bass als ›musikalischen Reisproviant‹ ein. Auch in den Folgejahren
musizierte er immer wieder mit besonderer Freude Bachs Werke. Und 1778 gestand er seinem Vater
gegenüber: »Ich liebe ihn, wie sie wohl wissen, von ganzem herzen – und habe hochachtung für
ihn, und er – das ist einmahl gewis, daß er mich […] Ernsthaft – wahrhaft, gelobt hat«. In wieweit
eine direkte Beeinflussung Mozarts durch Bach im Einzelnen nachweisbar ist, sei dahingestellt.
Die Gegenüberstellung symphonischer Werke beider Meister dürfte jedenfalls ein in jeder Hinsicht
reizvolles Unterfangen sein.
In 1763, while visiting London on his first grand tour of Europe, Mozart won the approval of
Johann Christian Bach, who would exercise a long-lasting influence on his art. The boy immediately
arranged three of Bach‘s piano sonatas as “musical victuals“ for two violins and bass, and he played
Bach‘s music frequently and with great pleasure in the years that followed. In 1778 he confided to
his father: “I love him, as you know, and respect him with all my heart; and as for him, there is no
doubt that [...] he praised me warmly and in all seriousness.“ Whether Mozart directly borrowed
from Bach‘s music can probably never be proved, but comparing the symphonies of these masterly
composers is a source of delight in every respect.
Au cours de son premier grand voyage en Europe, le jeune Mozart fit la conquête de Johann
Christian Bach, à Londres en 1763, et la personnalité de ce musicien devait le marquer à jamais.
Mozart arrangea alors pour son propre usage trois sonates pour clavier de Bach pour deux violons
et basse, qui lui servaient de « nourriture musicale » lors de ses voyages. Au cours des années
suivantes, il joua les œuvres de Bach avec un plaisir tout particulier. Et en 1778, il avoua à son père :
« [...] je l’aime de tout cœur (vous le savez bien). J’éprouve du respect pour lui. Quant à lui – il est
bien certain qu’il m’a loué très sincèrement [...] sans exagération [...] mais avec sérieux. » Il est
impossible de savoir dans le détail quelle influence Bach exerça sur Mozart. Mais la confrontation
des œuvres symphoniques des deux maîtres est incontestablement très séduisante, à tous points
de vue.
