pulp (non-integrated mill only). The description of each
process is as follows:
a. Wood Preparation
Wood is the main raw material used to produce pulp.
Wood is generally shaped log or chip and processed in the
timber handling area, referred to as wood-yard. In general,
wood-yard operation is separate from the type of pulping
process. When the timber enter the wood-yard in the form
of log, it is necessary to do a series of operations for logs
entering the pulping process, usually prepared in the form
of wood chips. Logs are transported to the slasher, to be
withheld in accordance with the desired size, followed by
the removal of bark, flakiness, chip screening, and
transportation to storage. Chips produced from logs or
purchased chip typically stored in a large storage pile.
b. Pulping
During the pulping process, wood chips are separated
into individual cellulose fibers to remove lignin (adhesive
material between cells that glue the cellulose fibers
together) of wood. There are five main types of pulping
processes: (1) chemical, (2) mechanical, (3) semichemical,
(4) recycling, and (5) other (eg, dissolving, nonwood).
The most common pulping processes are chemical
processes.
Manufacture of chemical pulp (ie, Kraft, soda, and
sulfite) involves "cooking" raw materials (wood chip) using
an aqueous chemical solution, high temperature and
pressure to isolate the fiber pulp. Kraft pulping process is
the most common pulping process used by pulp mills in
Indonesia to produce virgin fiber.
