PAPERMAKING TECHNOLOGY FOR SAVING
ENERGY AND LOW CARBON
4.1 Papermaking Technology
4.1.1 Stock Prep: Refining
Refining is a unit in stock prep with the most
energy consuming. Basically saving measures that can be
done is to increase refineability of the fiber that will be
refined. The most conventional way to do this is by using
refining additive. One example of such additives is CMC
(carboxy methylcellulose), which works exactly like a
component of hemicellulose in the fiber. Fiber-containing
hemicellulose has a higher refineability and also better.
Selection of refiner bar pattern also determine the
energy consumption of refining. Current models are usually
designed for refiner energy as low as possible, and most
importantly is the knife model for short fiber should not be
equals with for a long fiber.
Current refining technology for energy saving is to use
enzymes. For certain enzymes, lab-scale experiments
showed energy savings can occur up to 40%. The Using of
enzymes continues developed because it is very effective
and even more environmentally friendly than using
chemical additives.
causing increased consumption of energy and steam to the
