Pulp and paper industries in some countries, have
made sludge waste management with use it as compost
with a good quality (Carter, 1983). Some pulp and paper
industry in Indonesia has also examined the utilization of
sludge waste as compost and test try to plant. The study
indicates that the sludge compost application at a dose of
10 tons / ha to increase the productivity of various crops
and soil quality significantly. However, continuous
application is only done by an industry that has timber
estate.
5.2.4. Anaerobic Digestion Process
The mechanism of biochemical reactions that
occurred in anaerobic process can be seen in Figure 5.6.
The process of anaerobic digestion is the process of
biodegradation of organic compounds by anaerobic
bacterial activity through several stages of hydrolysis,
acidification and methanation. Anaerobic biodegradation
produces biogas consisting of methane (50-70%), CO2 (25-
45%) and small amounts of hydrogen, nitrogen and H2S
(Elizabeth. 1981; kharistya. 2004).
